GRANTSOON

Letter of support template

Send this to a partner who is writing on your behalf, or fill it in together. Each part has guidance and an example, and a full sample letter is below. It goes with your grant proposal.

0 of 6 sections written. Your draft saves in this browser as you type.

  1. 01Opening

Date the letter and address it to the funder's program officer or review panel. In the first sentence, say who you are, which organization you support, the grant program and the project by name.

Example On behalf of Riverside Unified School District, I am pleased to support Riverside Food Pantry's application to the Community Foundation for its Saturday Pantry for Working Families.

  2. 02Who you are

One or two sentences on your organization and why your view counts: who you serve, your role in the community or your expertise in the project's field.

Example Our district serves 21,000 students, and our four family resource centers help parents find food, housing and health services.

  3. 03Your relationship to the applicant

How long you have worked together and what you have done together. Specific shared work is more convincing than general praise.

Example Since 2019 our centers have referred families to the pantry, and together we ran a summer meal pickup that served 1,200 children in 2025.

  4. 04Why the project matters

What you see that shows the need, from your own work. Add one fact or number of your own rather than repeating the applicant's proposal.

Example Our staff hear every week from parents who work weekday shifts and cannot reach any pantry during open hours.

  5. 05What you will contribute

The heart of the letter. State exactly what you will do or give: referrals, space, staff time, data, equipment or cash, with numbers and dates. If you commit nothing, say how you will take part.

Example From January to June, our four centers will refer families each week, share flyers in 12 schools and give the pantry a table at our monthly family nights.

  6. 06Closing and signature

Restate your support in one sentence, offer to answer questions, and sign with your name, title, organization, phone and email. Print it on letterhead.

Example We urge the Foundation to fund this project. Please contact me at (555) 010-0200 with any questions.

Ms. Maria Alvarez, Program Officer
Riverside Community Foundation

Dear Ms. Alvarez,

On behalf of Riverside Unified School District, I am pleased to support Riverside Food Pantry's application to the Community Foundation for its Saturday Pantry for Working Families.

Our district serves 21,000 students in 28 schools. Our four family resource centers help parents find food, housing, health care and job training, and they see more than 3,000 families a year.

We have worked with Riverside Food Pantry since 2019. Our centers refer families to the pantry every week, and in summer 2025 we ran a joint meal pickup at three schools that served 1,200 children.

Our staff hear every week from parents who work weekday shifts at warehouses, stores and hospitals and cannot reach any pantry while it is open. In our fall family survey, 38% of families at our east Riverside schools said they had skipped meals in the past month.

From January through June 2027, our family resource centers will refer families to the Saturday pantry each week, send the pantry's flyer home with students in our 12 east Riverside schools, and host a pantry table at our monthly family nights. We will also share, with family consent, referral counts each quarter so the pantry can track its reach.

Riverside Food Pantry has been a reliable partner for our families, and Saturday hours would reach parents we cannot help today. We urge the Foundation to fund this project. Please contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Angela Ruiz

Questions

What is a letter of support for a grant?

A letter from a partner, such as a school, city office, clinic or community group, that backs your application and says what it will contribute. Funders read it as proof that the project has partners and that the community wants it.

What makes a letter of support strong?

Specific commitments. A letter that says the partner will refer families every week, host meetings or share data carries more weight than one that only praises the applicant. Each letter should be written in the partner's own words, not copied from another.

Who signs a letter of support?

Someone who can commit the partner organization: a director, principal, department head or board chair. Print it on the partner's letterhead and include a phone number and email.

Is a letter of support the same as a letter of commitment?

Not quite. Some funders, especially federal agencies, ask for letters of commitment that spell out resources or match funding the partner will provide. If the notice asks for commitment letters, state the resources and their value.
