STTR grants
STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) works like SBIR but requires the small business to partner with a university or nonprofit research institution, which must do at least 30% of the work. Five agencies take part.
Like SBIR, it lapsed on September 30, 2025 and was reauthorized on April 13, 2026 through September 30, 2031.

Questions
When is the next STTR grant deadline?
The next deadline is April 5, 2027 for NIH Small Business Technology Transfer Grant (Parent STTR [R41/R42] Clinical Trial Optional).
How do I apply for an STTR grant?
Register your organization in SAM.gov to get a Unique Entity ID, create a Grants.gov account, then find the opportunity and submit before its deadline. Some agencies finish the application in their own system, such as JustGrants, eRA Commons or Research.gov.
Can individuals get STTR grants?
Rarely. Federal grants go mostly to organizations: nonprofits, local governments, tribes, schools, colleges and, in research programs, small businesses. Help for individuals usually comes through state and local agencies.
Do I have to pay to apply for a grant?
No. Real grant programs never charge to apply or to receive an award. Anyone asking for a fee before you get grant money is running a scam.
